Bahamas consists of 29 islands, 2,387 islets and 661 cays and the country is officially known as Commonwealth of Bahamas. The country is located in Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by Hispaniola, Cuba, United States and Turks and Caicos Islands. The capital of Bahamas is Nassau and the island was inhabited originally by Taino people who speak Arawakan. Bahamas was the Crown Colony of British and the country gained full independence in the year 1973. The largest inhabited island of Bahamas is the Andros Island and other islands inhabited are Cat Island, San Salvador Island, Eleuthera, Long Island, Exuma, Acklins, Mayaguana and Crooked Island.
The country is sovereign independent and member of Commonwealth Nations. Head of the state is Queen Elizabeth II and head of the government is Prime Minister. Bicameral parliament holds the legislative power and the cabinet holds the executive power. Bahamas is mainly a two party system which is dominated by centre-right Free National Movement and centre-left Progressive Liberal Party. Other parties are Bahamian Nationalist Party, Bahamas Democratic Movement and Coalition for Democratic Reform. Freedom of worship, association, movement, worship and press are included in the constitution. Judiciary system is independent from legislative and executive powers.
Bahamas is one among the prosperous countries of the Caribbean and the economy is mainly dependent on tourism. More than 60% of the economy of the country is from tourism sector and also provides employment for more than 50% of the population. Population of the country is more than three hundred thousand. Of which 85% are Afro-Bahamians and other 15% consists of Hispanic, Asian/Indo-Caribbean and European Bahamian. Christianity is the major religion of Bahamas because more than 85% of the population consists of Christians. Other religions include Muslims, Hindus, Bahais and Rastafarians. The official language of the country is English and other spoken language is Bahamian dialect.
There are several tourist destinations in Bahamas with over 700 islands that include large rock formations and uninhabited cays. Nassau is an important destination of tourists in Bahamas as the capital is filled with scenic beauty. Nassau is a heavily populated city with high density of population when compared to other places in the island. Another gorgeous city is Freeport with modern harbor and the natural beauty of this city is great with its cascading waterfalls and long beaches. You can also find museums such as Roselawn Museum, the Bahamas Historical Society Museum and the Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation.
Some of the historical sites in Bahamas are Balcony House, Queen’s Staircase and Parliament Square. The Versailles Gardens and The Retreat are two gardens worth visiting in Bahamas. Crystal Cay is the zoo that houses wide variety of animal species. In Bahamas, you can also enjoy water sporting activities such as snorkeling, fishing and scuba diving. You can play golf at any of the several golf courses in Bahamas. Exuma Cays Land is a popular tourist destination of the country. One of the must see tourist attractions is the Atlantis Hotel Aquarium as you can find schools of fish and sting ray in the aquarium.
