Germany is located in Western Europe. Berlin is the capital city of the country. Germany was a region called Germania inhabited by Germanic people before 100AD. From the beginning of 10th century, the territories of Germany formed Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. In the year 1871, German Empire was formed in 1871 by unifying all the different parts of the country except for Austria. In 1918, it became Weimar Republic after the First World War and German revolution. The country was divided into two, namely, West Germany and East Germany by the allied occupation. Reunification of the country happened in the year 1990.
The country is a democratic federal republic with a parliamentary system. Head of the state is the president and head of the government is the Chancellor. Executive power of the country is exercised by the Federal Cabinet and the legislative power is exercised by Bundestag (parliament) and Bundesrat (representative body of regional states). Judicial system of Germany is independent from executive and legislative powers. Germany’s economy is the fourth largest in the world and the people of Germany are enjoying highest standards of living. The country depends on a social market economy with its huge capital stock, low corruption level, high innovation level and qualified labor force.
Germany has a total population of 82.7 million which makes it the most populous nation of European Union. About 91% of the population consists of German nationals. The dominant religion of Germany is Christianity of which 30% are Catholics, 29.9% of the population is Protestants and remaining 3% comes under the smaller denomination of Christianity. Other religions of the country are Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and Sikhism. The official language of the country is German. Other languages used in the country are Polish, Kurdish, Turkish, Russian and Balkan languages.
Germany is a perfect tourist destination for the tourists because of its historic treasures and picturesque towns. Berlin has a variety of tourist destinations. Berlin wall museum is one among them and it allows you to know the past of the divided Germany. Some of the tourist attractions of Berlin include Spandau Citadel, Bundesrat, New Synagogue, Television tower, Brandenburg Gate, Olympic Stadium and so on. Neuschwanstein Castle is a fairytale castle of King Ludwig II. Hohenschwangau Castle was also built by King Ludwig II. Both the castles are standing against the backdrop of Alps Mountains.
Lake Constance is a major attraction as Reichenau and Mainau islands are situated in the Lake. Reichenau Island is listed by UNESCO as the World Heritage Site. Mainau is known as the island of flower because of the several gardens and parks. The gardens and palaces of Potsdam are also worth seeing. Among the palaces and gardens, Sanssouci Palace and garden is the most famous and beautiful one. The white colored chalk cliffs situate don the coast of Jasmund peninsula is a must see attraction of Germany. Church of Our Lady in Dresden is the beautiful example of Baroque architecture. Bamberg is a World Heritage Site consists of architectural monuments like Baroque houses and medieval churches.
