Nepal is located in South Asia and landlocked by other countries. Nepal is bordered by China in north and east, west and south by India. In terms of land area, Nepal is in 93rd position among the largest countries of the world. Nepal is in the 41st position among the most populous country of the world. The capital of Nepal is Kathmandu which is also the largest metropolis of the country. Nepal has eight tallest mountains out of the total ten in the world. Mount Everest, the highest point of earth is situated in Nepal. Evidences of Neolithic tools in Kathmandu Valley shows that human inhabitation have been there for a minimum of 9,000 years.
Nepal was a monarchy for most of the country’s history. From 1768 onwards, kings of Shah Dynasty ruled Nepal and the unification of the small kingdoms was done by Prithvi Narayan Shah. In the year 2006, civil war of a decade by Maoist and other mass protests lead by all the important political parties of Nepal ensured elections. Gyanendra Shah, the last monarch of Nepal was abdicated and Nepal established as a democratic republic in the year 2008. Ram Baran Yadav became the first President of Nepal.
Nepal’s economy is the 115th among the largest economies of the world. Agriculture plays a major role in the economy of the country along with services and industry. Tourism has a great potential in Nepal with its diverse culture and spectacular landscape. The population of Nepal is 29 million and the early inhabitants were Kirat, Newar and aboriginal Tharu. The descendants of Nepal are mainly from three migration and they are Tibet, India and North Burma and Yunnan. Nepal is a multi-lingual country with four main groups of languages.
The four groups are Mongolian, Tibeto-Burman, Indo-Aryan and other indigenous languages. The main languages spoken in Nepal are Nepali, Bhojpuri, Maithili, Tamang, Tharu, Magar, Nepal Bhasa, Rai, Bajjika, Awadhi and Limbu. Hinduism is the major religion of Nepal with overwhelming majority. Buddhism is practiced by 10% of the population whereas Hinduism is practiced by more than 80% of the population. Other religions like Islam and Jainism are only minorities. Nepal has a variety of tourist destinations like adventure sites. World heritage sites, holy sites and architectural sites. Some of the UNE Royal Chitwan National Park, SCO World Heritage Sites of Nepal are Pashupatinath Temple, Changunarayan Temple, Bhaktapur Durbar square, Kathmandu Durbar Square and Golden Gate. Some of the architectural sites worth visiting are Syambhynath, Bodhnath Stupa and Hanuman Dhoka. Gosainkunda Lake is a famous pilgrimage place of Nepal. Panauti is a beautiful countryside with temples and ancient houses. Palanchowk Bhagawati is a historic temple with beautiful image of Goddess Bhagawati in stone. Helambu is famous for scenic beauty, pleasant climate and Buddhist monasteries. Lumbini, birth place of Gautama Buddha is a famous tourist spot with broken Ashoka Pillar, remain of an old monastery, images of Maya Devi who is the mother of Buddha etc are preserved here.
