Nigeria is situated in West Africa and the country is bordered by Benin, Chad, Niger, Gulf of Guinea, Atlantic Ocean and Cameroon. The capital of Nigeria is Abuja. The human inhabitation in Nigeria dated back to 9000 BCE. Several kingdoms ruled the country before the colonial era. The first European explorers who came to Nigeria are Portuguese and Spaniards. Nigeria became the protectorate of British in the year 1901. Nigeria got independence from United Kingdom in the year 1960. From 1966-1999, Nigeria was under the military rule. In 1999, Nigeria re-established the democracy and Olusegun Obasanjo who was the military head of the state became the President of Nigeria.

The country is a Presidential Federal Republic based on the constitution of United States. The executive power is vested on the president and Goodluck Jonathan is the current president of the country. The president is the head of the state as well as the head of national executive. The power of the president is check by the Senate and House of Representatives. Supreme Court is the highest court of the country. Economy of Nigeria is a mixed economy with its natural resources and well-developed sectors like transport, communications, financial, stock exchange and legal.

Nigeria is the seventh populous country in the world. The population of the country is 190.9 million and the country has over 250 ethnic groups with different customs and languages. The major ethnic groups are Yoruba, Igbo and Fulani/Huasa which accounts about 68% of the population. Other ethnic groups are Ebira Nupe, Tiv, Ibibio, Kanur, Ijaw and Edo and several others. Nigeria has 510 living languages and the official language of the country is English. Some of the major languages spoken in the country are Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Kanuri and Nigerian English. Half of the population is Muslims and other religious beliefs followed by the people are Christianity, Judaism, Baha’i and Judaism in which Christianity has the majority with 48.2%.

Nigeria has several tourist destinations. Azumini Blue River is the major resort of the tourists with crystal clear water, sandy beaches and canoe rides. The Long Juju Shrine of Arochukwu is the favorite destination of the tourists with the cave that suppose to have a long metal pipe by which gods are speaking to the people. Yola is a famous tourist spot with three sister hills and the city also celebrates fishing festival. Ibeno Beach is suitable for water sports. Ogbunike Cave is referred as nature’s wonder and the cave is divided into sections. There are several stories about the sections of the cave.

Rojenny Tourist village has attractions such as amusement park, sporting facilities and joy rides. Igbo-Ukwu is famous for the bronze artifacts dated back to 9th century. Yankari National park is the developed park of Nigeria with various animals such as Elephants, Bushbucks, Crocodiles, Baboons, Gaji River, Warthogs, Hippopotamus and Duikers. Wikki Warm Springs is another popular attraction in Yankari National Park. Kano city is famous for its historical importance with architectural landmarks dated back to 999 AD. Lagos is a city famous for commercial activities and the city is the home of various museums.
