Slovakia is a country situated in Central Europe. Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia. This landlocked country is bordered by Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine. Archaeological evidences of prehistoric human beings have found in this region. During 5th and 6th centuries, Slavs reached the region and settled here. In 7th century, Slovakia was ruled by Samo’s Empire, Principality of Nitra (a new Slavic state), Great Moravia, Kingdom of Hungary, Habsburg Empire and Czechoslovakia. Separate Slovakia was existed briefly during Second World War when Slovakia was the dependent of Nazi Germany from 1939 to 1944.

Slovakia joined together with Czech to form Czechoslovakia from 1945. Czechoslovakia dissolved to form Slovakia and Czech Republic in 1993. Slovakia is at present a democratic republic country with parliamentary system of government. President of Slovakia is the head of the state, and Prime Minister of Slovakia is the head of the government. President appoints the Prime Minister. Executive power of Slovakia is vested on the Prime Minister and the legislative power is exercised by the parliament. Judicial system is independent from other powers of the country. Slovakia has an advanced economy and it depends on the market economy. The economy of Slovenia mainly depends on heavy industry, service sector and agricultural sector.

The population of Slovakia is 5.45 million, and the major ethnic group of the country is Slovaks which consists of 85.8%. Other ethnic groups of Slovakia are Hungarians, Roma people, Czechs, Ukrainians, Germans, Rusyns, Serbs, Jews and Poles. Slovak is the official language of Slovakia. Hungarian language is also spoken widely among the people of southern regions. Slovakia guarantees religious freedom for its citizens. About 69% of the population is following Roman Catholicism. Others are atheists, Protestants, Orthodox, Greek Catholics, Islam and Judaism.

With unspoiled nature, cultural sites, historic places, mountains, caves and outdoor activities makes Slovenia a popular tourist destination. Bratislava, the capital city has several historical attractions such as cobblestone streets, Gothic churches, Renaissance churches, castles, fountains and houses. Tatra Mountains are the major attraction of Slovakia situated at the highest part of Carpathians. Tatra Mountains offer several opportunities for mountaineering, hiking and skiing. The popular castles in Slovakia are Bojnice Castle, Spis Castle, Bratislava Castle, Devin Castle ruins, Orava Castle and Cachtice Castle. Kosice is a popular tourist destination where you can find museums and monuments. Some of the popular tourist spots of Kosice are Kosice Cathedral, St, Michal’s Chapel, palatial homes and Urban’s tower.

Bardejov has tourist spots such as St. Giles Church, town hall of 16th century and historical centre with 131 cultural monuments. Levoca is a historical city of Middle Ages popular for its history and monuments. Church of St. James and the Town Hall are the major attractions of Levoca. Slovak Karst National Park is a major attraction of Slovakia which consists of 400 caves, and some of the famous caves of the park are Domica cave, Ochtinska Aragonite Cave, Donsina Ice Caves, Gombasecka Cave, Silica Ice Cave and Jasov Cave. Banska Bystica and Banska Stiavnica are the famous historical towns of Slovakia worth visiting.
