Slovenia is situated in Southeastern Europe and Central Europe. Slovenia is bordered by Italy, Croatia, Hungary and Austria. Ljublijana is the capital of Slovenia. Slovenia was inhabited by human beings during prehistoric times. Slovenia was ruled by Roman Empire, Holy Roman Empire and Habsburg Monarchy. Slovenia merged with Serbia to form Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and renamed as Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1918. Slovenia was conquered and annexed by Croatia, Hungary, Germany and Italy during Second World War. But Yugoslavia was reestablished during Second World War and Slovenia joined with Federal Yugoslavia. Slovenia declared independence in the year 1991.
Slovenia is a democratic republic with parliamentary system in which head of the state is the president. Prime Minister of Slovenia is the head of the government. Slovenian government is responsible for the executive power, and legislative power is exercised by National Assemble and partially taken care by the National Council. Judiciary system is independent from both executive and legislative powers. Slovenia has a developed economy, and the country is largely benefitted from its educated and productive labor force. About 99% of the population is literate. The country has an effective and vigorous system of economic and political conditions.
Slovenia has a total population of 2 million, and the major ethnic group of the country is Slovene which consists of 83% of the population. Other minor ethnic groups are Serbs, Croats, Hungarians, Italians, Albanians, Montenegrins, Romani and Macedonians. About 58% of the population is Roman Catholics. Other religious beliefs of the country are Islam, Judaism, Protestantism and Orthodox Christianity. The official language of Slovenia is Slovene. Other languages spoken among the Slovenians are Serbo-Croatian, Albanian, Hungarian, and Romani people, Italians, German and Macedonian. Italian and Hungarian languages also enjoy official language status along the borders of Hungary and Italy.
Slovenia is popular for its scenic beauty, arts, ancient structures, beaches, museums, casinos, lakes, mountains, churches and dense forests. Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia consists of tourist spots such as City Museum, National Museum, Plecnik’s House, Modern Art Gallery and National Gallery. Ljunliana Cathedral is popular for its twin towers. Triglav National Park of Slovenia is named after its highest mountain Triglav. The park consists of mountain crests, glacier valleys, peaks and two forest plateaus. In the park, you can also find Slovenia’s longest rivers, Sava and Soea, and several small glacier lakes. Piran is the old seaport of Slovenia worth visiting as you can enjoy the Venetian architecture and seafood at waterfront restaurants.
Postojna Cave is the popular tourist destination where you can enjoy the stalagmites and stalactites formations of various colors and shapes. You can travel through the cave in an electric train, and you can also see proteus anguinus, the human fish in the cave. Lake Bled is another great attraction of Slovenia with its neo-gothic church and Bled Castle. The lake has thermal springs, and you can also enjoy the several entertainment activities here that range from golf courses to casino. Some of the heritage sites of Slovenia are Ljubljana Castle, Bogensperk Castle, Bled Castle, Ptuj Castle, Predjama Castle, Tabor Castle and Dobrovo manor.
