Sudan situated in northeastern Africa and the country is bordered by Egypt, Red Sea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Republic of Congo, Chad, Libya and Central African Republic. The capital of Sudan is Khartoum. The country is divided by the longest river of the world, Nile from east to west. The country was inhabited about 70,000 years back. Northern Sudan was conquered by Egypt ruler in 1820 and remaining parts of Sudan was conquered later. British conquered Egypt in the year 1882 and due to the revolt led by Muhammad Ahmad ibn Abd Allah, both Egypt and British withdrew their forces from the country.
British and Egypt re-established the control on Sudan in 1890s and the country got independence from them in the year 1956. Sudan suffered from First civil war of seventeen years from 1955 to 1972 and Second Civil war started in 1983. Colonel Omar al-Bashir seized the power of Sudan in the year 1989 and proclaimed himself as the President of Sudan. The politics of Sudan is officially the federal presidential representative in which the head of the state, commander-in-chief of Armed Forces and head of the government is the president. Legislative power is executed by bicameral parliament and the government. The judicial system is independent from executive and legislative powers.
Sudan is facing economic problems and it should come up from the low per capita income. Major export of Sudan is oil and oil production is also increasing. The economy of Sudan is booming with oil revenues and Sudan has abundant mineral resources. The total population of the country is 25 million and there are 597 ethnicities in Sudan. The two major ethnic groups of the country are Sudanese Arabs and Nilote people. These two major groups consist of several smaller ethnic groups and tribal divisions. Seventy percent of the population is following Islamic religion. Other minority religions are Christianity and indigenous beliefs. Sudan has 133 living languages and the languages most used by the people are Sudanese Arabic and tribal languages. English language is spoken by elite and educated people.
Khartoum, the capital of Sudan is famous for its tourist spots. The National Museum of Sudan is situated in the capital with historical artifacts and antiquities. Semna and Buhen Egyptian temples are situated in the capital. The Souq in Omdurman has a variety of goods are displayed such as jewelries, ebony candlesticks and Ivory candlesticks. Best time for visiting the Souq is on Friday mornings. Other places worth visiting in Omdurman are Camel Market, Tomb of the Mahdi and Beit al-Khalifa.
Meroe is an ancient city located on the banks of Nile and the city consists of 200 pyramids. Other attractions of Meroe are Great Enclosure and Temple of God Amun. Red Sea coastal lines of Sudan are one of the biggest attractions. Arkawit resort area offers peaceful relaxation to the tourists with its scenic beauty. Suakin Island is an island with beautiful and unique architecture made up of coral. Karima is a place where you can see many ancient sites that are worth visiting. Shendi is a place where you can see desert and temples with Meroe culture. Jebel Marra Mountains, an extinct volcano is a place of sightseeing because you can find rivers, hills as well as beautiful valleys around this extinct volcanic mountain.
