Tunisia is situated in northern part of Africa and the country is bordered by Libya, Algeria and Mediterranean Sea. The capital of the country is Tunis and the country got the name from its capital. The country is the smallest one situated in Atlas mountain range. The country was first inhabited by the Berber tribes according to the recorded history. The country was conquered by Vandals in 5th century, Byzantines in 6th century and Arabs in 8th century. The country was called as Regency of Tunis under Ottoman Empire. In the year 1881, the country became French protectorate. The country got independence in the year 1956.

After independence, the country took the name “Kingdom of Tunisia”. The country is a presidential republic in which head of the state is the President. Head of the government is Prime Minister. The court system is based on the civil law of France and Islamic law. President appoints the prime minister and the cabinet. Central government appoints local administrator and regional governors. Tunisia depends of diverse economy that ranges from agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and mining to petroleum products. About 11.6% of the economy depends on the agricultural sector, 62.8% depends on service sectors and 25.7% on industry.

The total population in Tunisia is more than 10 million. About 98% of the Tunisians are Arab-Berber or Arabs. The European population of Tunisia is about 1% that consists of Italians and French. Jews are also there in the country in small numbers. The official religion of the country is Islam and Muslim President is mandatory in the country. But people of the country are enjoying religious freedom. About 98% of the population is Muslims and other religions are Judaism and Christianity. The official language of the country is Modern Standard Arabic. Tunisian Arabic is considered as the native language of Tunisia. Other languages spoken within the country are French, Italian and Shelha.

Tunis, the capital city of the country has many tourist spots. The ancient city of Carthage is located in Tunis and the city plays a major role at the time of Punics, Phoenicians and Romans. The world famous Souq is located in Tunis where you can find authentic products. Bardo Museum in Tunis is the palace of Ottoman rule which consists of showpieces from Sousse, Mahdia, Roman-Arab and Carthage artifacts. Cathedral of St. Vincent De Paul of Tunis is the oldest building of colonial era. Zitouna Mosque in Tunis is the largest mosque of Tunisia which was built in 8th century.

Travelers can enjoy the Oasis in Gabes as it is feature with many artesian wells and small settlements. In this place, you can also enjoy scenic sightseeing and cultural tour. Lake Ichkeul situated in Bizerte has interesting species of plants such as pink garlic and pale purple garlic. The lake is also suitable for hiking and fishing. Kairouan is a place where early mosques are situated. In Kairouan, you can find souvenir stores from where you can purchase carpets at an affordable rate. Kelibai Fortress is another attraction in the country which was built in early 1200s.
