Camping in Sossusvlei

Camping is one of the traditional ways to experience a desert of Sossusvlei. A gathering of people staying together and sharing a common space in the evenings makes the experience more genuine. Camps are quite common in the Sossusvlei region and they are equipped with the best facilities to make your desert safari more real. Sossusvlei camps have all amenities making the guests stay even more comfortable.

Betesda Rest Camp: It is one of the typical Sossusvlei camps with good quality accommodation. People of all age groups including children can stay in the camp’s 25 double rooms while families can make use of the 5 family rooms the camp offers. Every suite has an attached bathroom with all modern facilities. Mosquito nets also have been provided for every window. The rest camp has a restaurant and bar which serves authentic Namibian cuisine in a buffet menu. The Betesda Rest Camp’s other facilities include a swimming pool, a common lounge area, laundry service, ramps for wheelchairs as well as a secure parking lot. The camp provides excursions to the Sossusvlei at sunrise, walks to the Sesriem Canyon, quad-biking and sundowner drives. The lodge is Christian based, but people of all faiths can be comfortable there.

Desert Camp: It is a small campsite located in the premises of the Taleni Africa private reserve. This Sossusvlei camp allows its guests to do their own thing but without disturbing the tranquility of the surroundings. Guests can cook their own meals, drive around at their leisure and even mingle with the other guests too. Desert Camp has 20 rooms in total with built in kitchens. The camp’s management provides utensils, starter packs for cooking which include meat, vegetables, spices and condiments, breads and cheese and beverages and a storage box. All these can be hired from the reception after a caution deposit. Firewood and lighters too can be hired. Each cottage has its own parking space. Desert Camp also has a swimming pool, a common lounge area and public toilets. Since the camp is located in the reserve itself, one can spot several wildlife species on their way to the Sossusvlei, the Sesriem Canyon and the Namib Naukluft Park.

Kulala Wilderness Camp: It has a traditional African set up and is surrounded by camel thorn trees. The desert atmosphere is evident with the backdrop of the Sossusvlei, the Tsauchab River and the camel thorn trees. Accommodation includes 10 individual and private ‘kulalas’ or huts built of canvas, wood and thatched roofs. The camp’s main area is very unique. It is built on two levels. The upper deck houses the dining area, while the swimming pool is located below it. The dining room has a single, long table where everyone can sit together and eat. Guests can opt for food from the menu or order their own preferences. There is an outer deck which has individual chairs and tables. There is also a bar, a lounge with sofas and coffee tables and a gift shop. The Kulala Wilderness Camp arranges sunrise drives to the Sossusvlei and is the only Sossusvlei camp which has a private entrance to the Tsauchab River.
