Mauritius has a tropical climate. This means it is generally sunny in the country all year round, making Mauritius a perfect tourist destination. The temperatures may vary a bit depending on your location. It is much cooler on the central plateau, which is 400 m above the sea level, than on the coasts. The interior region’s temperature is also 3 to 5° C lower than in the costs. The plateau also experiences more rainfall than other parts of the island. The northern and western regions experience more sunshine whereas trade winds on the eastern section of the island make this region cooler, with more rainfall. Sea temperature varies from 22° C to 27° C. The weather is basically temperate, so extreme weather changes are not at all usual. In general, the climate is pleasant and acceptable, being usually sunny (some months may be more hot and humid than others), with heavy rainfalls occurring at certain months.
The country’s climate may vary slightly depending on its two seasons. Summer, lasting from November to April, is hot and humid. February is the warmest month, having an average temperature of 28° C but could reach a peak of 34° C. In the plateau, even summer months are cooler at 22° C. Strong winds and heavy rains are experienced between January and March. The most extreme weather condition in this country is cyclones, usually experienced between December and March, the cyclone season. However, it is very rarely that the country is hit by one that is so destructive. The last violent one was Cyclone Hollanda, devastating Mauritius in 1994 and leaving damages worth US$ 81 million. Since fierce cyclones do not hit the country very often, it is quite unlikely that you’ll meet one on your visit to Mauritius.
May to December is winter, although not your conventional European winter. There is actually little temperature difference between the two seasons. The sunny weather is still present during winter, although the average temperature drops to 22° C in the coasts and 16° C in the central plateau. The climate is very pleasant for those wishing to escape the harsh winter in other countries. In general, the winter season is the sunniest and driest times of the year. It is also the best time to visit the country as you will be assured of a sunny weather with only occasional rainfall. Even if the skies may be overcast, the surroundings remain pleasantly warm.
Given this delightful picture of Mauritius’ climate and weather, it is best to pack for light and tropical outfits when visiting the island. Long sleeves and trousers are also advisable for cooler evenings and to protect one from mosquitoes. Sunglasses are a must; so are rain clothing, even during winter season. Remember, you can never be assured of a totally sunny weather as occasional rainfall may still catch you even if you woke up to blue skies and warm sunshine.
