The Sossusvlei Dune Lodge is the best way to experience the might of the African continent. The first and only lodge to be built in the Namib-Naukluft Park, the Sossusvlei Dune Lodge was opened in the year 2007. Keeping in mind the region it is located in, the lodge was constructed with utmost care. Only environment friendly materials were used to maintain the ecological balance of the park and in order to preserve the fragile flora and fauna thriving in the Namib-Naukluft Park.
The accommodation facilities of the lodge are called ‘chalets’ and there are 25 of them spread over in a village like fashion. The chalets have canvas walls, thatched roofs and wooden frames. The interiors are a typical colonial African decor with a combination of leather and wood furnishings. One wall of the chalet is completely glass, supported by a wooden frame providing spectacular views of the surroundings. A gap between the glass and the ceiling provides air to flow in and out of the chalet. To keep mosquitoes at bay, nets in bright colours have been provided. Plush beds and suede lounge chairs give a cosy air to the chalet.
State of the art bathrooms with a wash basin, hot shower and a flush toilet ensure that the guests are comfortable. Each chalet is stocked with the lodge’s very own eco-friendly soaps, shampoos and body lotions and creams. The individual lodges are linked together by a wooden walkway with a rock and stone base. From a distance, the Sossusvlei Dune Lodge looks like a typical African hamlet complete with wooden huts and all.
The best part of the Sossusvlei Dune Lodge is that it is situated right in the Park and is a host to several wildlife species. Its proximity to the Sossusvlei allows guests the luxury to reach the dunes before sunrise and leave well after dusk has fallen. To witness the Sossusvlei’s varying moods at different times of the day is a chance of lifetime. The Sesriem Canyon is just a short walk away and guided tours are highly recommended. The lodge also has a swimming pool with pool side lounge chairs. The restaurant and bar are open to the skies and provide excellent food and drinks to their guests.
Of the twenty five chalets in the premises, twelve of them provide guests with a view of the mountain and canyon, while the remaining thirteen offer a stunning view of the dunes. The Sossusvlei Dune Lodge has two honeymoon suites. The chalets on the extreme ends are for honeymooners complete with an open air lounge. The lodge has a covered parking lot and guests commute from here to the reception area in a golf cart.
At the Sossusvlei Dune Lodge, guests can go on a sunset drive or a guided nature drive. Since the area is free of pollution, the star-studded skies are a star gazer’s fantasy turned reality. Guides offer interested guests star gazing walks within the premises. The Sossusvlei Dune Lodge allows tourists to witness the diversity and splendor of the Sossusvlei, Sesriem Canyon, the mountains and the Namib-Naukluft Park in the true African manner.
