In 1102, the kingdom of Croatia united with Hungary. The country declared independence in the year 1991. The country is now a democratic republic with parliamentary system. The present constitution of Croatia was adopted in the year 1990. The president of the country is the head of the state and head of the government is Prime Minister. The Croatian Parliament is unicameral and Banski dvori is the official residence of the government. Croatian economy is service-based and majority of the country’s economy depends on the service sector. The industrial sector is dominated by ship building. Tourism is also the major source of the income.
The total population of the country is around 4 million and the country is mainly inhabited by the Croats as they consist of 89.6% of the total population. Other minor ethnic groups are Boniaks, Serbs, Italians, Hungarians and Germans, Romani people, Slovenes, Czechs and others. The major religion of the country is Roman Catholic that consists of 88% of the total population. Other minority religions are Orthodox, other Christians, Muslims and others. The official language of Croatia is Croatian. The people of the country are protective about the Croatian language as the language constantly changed due to foreign influences and the threats from previous rulers.
